An Interview With NHS Track Coach, Kyle Manderfield
How is this year’s team shaping up compared to last season? What stands out about this group in terms of chemistry, leadership, and overall potential?
We had a lot of all state athletes graduate last year. We also have a lot of new faces, especially on the boys side. They are full of potential and willing to try new events. It will take some time before our final product is on the track but there are a lot of possibilities.
Who are a few players fans should keep an eye on this season? Are there returning leaders or emerging young players who could make a big impact?
Brandon brooks is a nationally ranked triple jumper and a great leader on our team. He is always working to perfect his craft and improve the culture of Nolensville track and field. Max Massey is also having a great year in the 800/1600m. He sets a great example for work ethic and team community.
What are the biggest strengths of this year’s squad? What style of play or identity do you expect this team to have on the track?
Our strength is you can’t get rid of us. We may not win every event on the track but we will be in the conversation. We have 130 athletes that are willing to throw, vault, jump, or run to find success. I’m proud of them for stepping out of their comfort zone.
What challenges will this team need to overcome to be successful? Are there areas where the team will need to grow as the season progresses?
Our youth and inexperience will be a challenge. There are a lot of athletes still getting familiar with how long a race actually is. They’re facing this challenge head on though. I think you’ll see a a huge difference in the strength of our team by the end of the season.
What are your expectations and goals for this season? How do you define success for this group both on and off the track?
We are now part of section 4 combining Memphis schools and Williamson County schools. This will be by far the best section in the state. My goal is to qualify just as many athletes to the sectional and to the state meet as last year. That will show great improvement even with the same numbers.
What makes Nolensville Track special? How does the support from the school and community impact your program and players?
Our kids love their community. They love each other and they love representing
Nolensville. I’d say thats the case for all our sports here. We live and compete in a special place. I try to remind them of that as much as I can.
