Be Very Careful Out There!
Watch for more bicycles and e-bikes on the road this summer.
As summer brings more people outdoors, the Nolensville Police Department is seeing a significant increase in the use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) along with traditional bikes throughout the community. E-bikes offer a fast and convenient way to get around, especially during the warmer months, but their higher speeds can make it challenging for drivers to accurately judge distance and react safely.
With more bikes on the road, the department urges everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—to stay alert and follow the rules of the road to keep Nolensville safe.
One growing concern is the improper use of road shoulders. It is illegal and dangerous to cross solid lines to drive on the shoulder. These areas are not designed for vehicle traffic and are often used by pedestrians and cyclists. Misuse can lead to serious accidents and will be subject to enforcement.
Drivers should exercise extra caution in school zones, parks, and residential neighborhoods where visibility might be limited, and cyclists and pedestrians are more common. Always check your surroundings before turning or changing lanes and provide plenty of space when passing cyclists.
E-bike riders share the responsibility to follow traffic laws. They must ride with the flow of traffic, obey all signs and signals, use hand signals when turning or stopping, and yield to pedestrians. When riding at night, e-bikes must be equipped with a white front light and a red rear reflector.
Tennessee law requires e-bike and traditional bike riders under 16 to wear a properly fitted helmet, and helmet use is strongly encouraged for all riders regardless of age.
The Nolensville Police Department is committed to promoting safe roadway use this summer and beyond.
Have a fun, safe summer, Nolensville!
