Holiday Fire Safety

Nolensville Fire & Rescue would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. With that, there are a few things we would like you to consider with that holiday joy and festive decorations. As always, you can check out our documents section on our website for safety flyers, fire prevention material, and of course our Kids Corner for a little fun and learning for the children.

Candles are a popular decoration this time of year, so here are a few tips for staying safe in your home. Always use a sturdy candle holder that can resist the heat as well as catch any dripping hot wax. Be sure to keep them away from flammable objects and away from children. Finaly, make sure to extinguish them when you are not around them.

Extension cords are handy but can be a fire hazard if not used properly. Power strips are meant to be plugged directly into a wall outlet, so do not overload your extension cord with a lot of electrical plugs. Make sure that the extension cord is not being compressed or makes any sharp bends that may wear out the insulation and cause heat. Follow all the manufacturers’ instructions on the specific cord you have, and you will be safe.

Fireplaces and space heaters are great for that extra warmth and cozy feeling but be sure they are being used properly. Make sure to have your chimney cleaned regularly if you have a wood burning fireplace to prevent any buildup that could catch fire. Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet and make sure they are on a solid stable surface and away from any flammables. Be sure the fire is completely extinguished, or the space heater is turned off before leaving.

If you are using a live Christmas tree, be sure to keep it watered, away from any flammables, and when done dispose of properly. Dry pine trees are extremely flammable and go into flames very quickly. Make sure to use lights and ornaments that will not increase the chance of a fire.
