Nolensville Fire & Rescue Enhances Capabilities with New Aerial Apparatus
Nolensville Fire & Rescue recently acquired a Smeal 107-foot aerial apparatus, commonly referred to as a ladder truck. This advanced piece of equipment significantly enhances the department’s emergency response capabilities and brings a host of features designed for both fire suppression and technical rescue operations.
The aerial ladder is rear-mounted, allowing for greater reach and operational flexibility when deployed from the rear or sides of the apparatus compared to over-the-front positioning. It can extend up to 107 feet vertically and 101 feet horizontally, making it ideal for accessing upper floors, rooftops, or areas difficult to reach by conventional means.
This apparatus is classified as a quint, meaning it fulfills five key functions:
• A 1,500-gallon-per-minute pump
• A 500-gallon onboard water tank
• Pre-connected hose lines
• A full set of ground ladders, including 30- and 35-foot models not carried on our engines
• An aerial ladder device
Additionally, the ladder truck includes ample compartment space utilized for technical rescue and vehicle extrication equipment, making it a multifunctional asset for a wide range of emergencies.
Versatile Rescue Capabilities
While its primary and most visible function is for rescuing occupants from multi-story structures, the ladder truck’s design allows it to operate in numerous challenging scenarios. The ladder can reach high windows and rooftops, even when deployed at a distance from the structure—a critical factor when navigating terrain, setbacks, or obstacles.
In flood emergencies, the ladder can extend at a low horizontal angle, enabling firefighters to reach individuals stranded in submerged vehicles or isolated by washed-out roads and bridges. This can eliminate the less safer option to send personnel into the water or attempt a boat rescue.
The truck is equipped with an optional rope rescue system, which allows the apparatus to perform vertical rescues, allowing personnel to safely lower or raise individuals from slopes, embankments, or other hard-to-reach areas—especially helpful in medical emergencies involving limited patient mobility.
Fireground and Scene Support
The truck is equipped with scene lighting mounted at the ladder tip, providing elevated illumination and enhanced situational awareness. This improves safety for both responders and civilians during nighttime or large-scale incidents. Being able to view an incident from above can provide a better perspective to resolve or mitigate the hazards.
One of the key features of the ladder truck is its elevated master stream, a waterway integrated along the aerial ladder that allows water to be delivered from above the fire. This is particularly effective for large residential or commercial fires, as well as incidents where access is restricted by fences, terrain, or other obstructions. The ability to quickly apply water from an overhead position supports a more effective fire attack and containment strategy.
In structure fires, the aerial also enables rapid roof access for ventilation operations. Proper vertical ventilation is crucial for removing heat and smoke, improving interior conditions for attack crews, and increasing survivability for anyone sheltering inside the structure.
A Force Multiplier for Public Safety
Nolensville’s new ladder truck provides much more than a tall ladder. It represents a strategic investment in public safety, expanding the department’s ability to rescue, suppress fire, and operate safely and efficiently in a wide range of emergency situations. Just as importantly, it helps ensure our firefighters can perform their duties with enhanced safety, so they can continue to protect our community for years to come.
